Why choose us?

Lugarno Public School is developing:

Resilient Learners

Students K-6 engage in regular sessions using the Bounce Back program and Positive Behaviour for Learning expectations. ‘Bounce Back’ is a program which has been developed to support teachers in their efforts to promote positive mental health and wellbeing in their students and, in particular, enable them to act resiliently when faced with challenges and adversity. ‘Bounce Back’ integrates the explicit teaching of important social and emotional skills. Our aim is to promote respectful relationships, belonging and inclusion at Lugarno PS.

All students in K-6 explore program units about core values, people bouncing back, courage, looking on the bright side, emotions, relationships, humour, anti-bullying and achieving success through effort. Students engage in regular classroom activities that include educational games, music, art, drama/role plays, literature and cooperative strategies such as discussions/class sharing and problem solving (‘Circle Time’). Many of the activities also feature critical and creative higher order thinking.

Weekly lessons which explore our whole-school Positive Behaviour for Learning Expectations ensure consistency and provide the staff, students and parents with a shared and consistent language for understanding expected behaviour.

Responsible and capable users of technology
Students are provided access to a wide range of digital devices and online services, such as iPads, interactive whiteboards, robotics tools, and digital platforms like Google Classroom, all embedded in teaching and learning programs.
The school’s Library is an innovative hub of learning, equipped with quality texts and technology devices.
Tech Club offers students the opportunity to develop coding skills.
The school’s approach ensures that student use of digital devices and online services is closely monitored so that students use these resources in a safe, responsible and respectful manner. Students may only use digital devices and online services in specific circumstances, such as for educational purposes, supporting student learning and wellbeing, or as part of reasonable adjustments for students with specific needs. Principals determine the school’s approach to digital devices and online services, consulting with staff, students and parents or carers, and clearly communicate any requirements.
The school is committed to supporting students to develop technological, social, and emotional competencies, while also ensuring their safety as responsible technology users and cyber citizens.
Creative and Critical thinkers
Lugarno PS is committed to ensuring that students develop capability in creative and critical thinking. Creative and critical thinking involves students thinking deeply using skills and behaviours such as reason, logic, imagination and innovation.
Excellence in literacy and numeracy

Lugarno Public School prides itself on its outstanding literacy and numeracy programs, grounded in evidence-based explicit teaching practices. In line with the NSW Plan for Education, our teachers deliver clear learning intentions and success criteria, provide focused instruction, and use ongoing formative assessment to identify and address individual learning needs. This approach ensures a strong foundation in mathematical understanding and fluency as well as literacy development.

Our literacy teaching focuses on building students’ skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, and comprehension through structured, systematic instruction. In numeracy, we prioritise building number sense and problem-solving abilities, helping students become confident and proficient mathematicians.

As a result, our students develop an increasingly sophisticated understanding of English and Mathematics and become creative thinkers and confident communicators prepared for future learning challenges.

Inspire - High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE)

Our school has a committed High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Committee that meets regularly to ensure students identified as high potential are appropriately supported across all domains: intellectual, creative, social-emotional, and physical. The school also provides a variety of enrichment opportunities for these students.

Our enrichment programs explore engineering, filmmaking skills, coding, and robotics. We understand the unique learning needs of our high potential students and are dedicated to nurturing their abilities and helping them reach their full potential in all domains.

For more information about our HPGE programs and support, please visit the HPGEpage on our website.
