Kindergarten
Starting school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.
Before your child starts Kindergarten

Parenting Information Evening
Our Parent Information Evening, held in August, gives parents and carers the opportunity to find out information about Lugarno Public School.
Leap Into Lugarno Kindergarten Transition Program
Our 'Leap Into Lugarno transition to Kindergarten program offers families and 2026 Kindergarten students the opportunity to familiarise themselves with our school, and prepare for a happy and successful start to Kindergarten.
It is held over 3 mornings in October-November with the final session including a Parent Information Session to learn about daily schedules, uniforms and communication.
Preparing for Kindergarten
Parents and caregivers can do a lot to help prepare their child for Kindergarten before the big “first day”. In the lead up to school, it is beneficial for children to be given plenty of opportunities to develop the following skills. Try:
- writing their name
- getting dressed independently
- packing, unpacking and carrying their school bag
- wearing a hat to play outside
- preparing for eating breaks
- social skills
- tidying up after themselves
- using the toilet independently
- personal hygiene
The Starting School Website has a video and an eBook to read with children, as well as information for parents.
What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily Routines
Children learn routines such as morning arrival, snack and lunch breaks, lining up, using bubblers and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in, but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child's literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
